❓Frequently Asked Questions
🏠 Program Overview
The Section 8 Housing Program, also known as the Housing Choice Voucher Program, provides rental assistance to low-income families, the elderly, and people with disabilities to help them afford safe, decent, and sanitary housing in the private market.
Section 8 provides rental assistance to eligible tenants who choose their own housing in the private market. Public housing, by contrast, involves living in government-owned units. Section 8 is generally more flexible, as tenants are not limited to specific housing complexes.
✅ Eligibility & Application Process
Eligibility is determined by the local Housing Authority and considers family size, income, and housing needs. Applicants generally must have an income below 50% of the area median income and meet other criteria set by the Housing Authority.
To apply through PCHA, you must submit an application when the waitlist is open. Applications will be available online. Continue checking our website for specific instructions, deadlines, and availability.
Wait times can vary based on demand and funding. PCHA currently has a long waiting list and cannot estimate how long an individual may wait for assistance.
You can check your waitlist status by logging into your RentCafe portal. Please note that while you will be able to confirm if you are on a waitlist, your exact position or number on the waitlist will not be displayed.
